ABSTRACT. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) crops produce a poor yield in northeastern Brazil compared to the other regions. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of irrigated cropping systems and sowing seasons on cowpea yield and profitability in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brazil. Field studies were performed in four experiments during the rainy and dry seasons during 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, which denoted harvests 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. A randomized block design was used for each experiment with four replicates and the following treatments for cropping systems: (1) manual weeding; (2) liming and manual weeding; (3) liming and phosphorus (P) fertilization at sowing, nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) topdressing fertilization, and chemical weed control; (4) liming and P fertilization at sowing, K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control; (5) liming and P fertilization at sowing, N and K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control; and (6) seed pretreatment with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo), liming and P fertilization at sowing, N and K topdressing fertilization, rhizobia inoculation, and chemical weed control. The technology added to cropping systems increased the number of pods per plant, pod length, seeds per pod, and 100-seed weight, irrespective of the rainy or dry sowing season. Economic analysis, in turn, showed that the technology decreased the total operating cost despite increasing the cost of mechanical operations, inputs, and materials because of the replacement of manual weeding by chemical weed control. However, these costs were not influenced by the sowing seasons. We concluded that technologically enhanced cropping systems, especially systems 4 and 6, improved grain yield and provided greater profitability, which translated into improved economic benefits for farmers. Conversely, the sowing season influenced profitability, which was higher for dry season harvests, when there was less product offered and prices became higher.

Resumo Os bioestimulantes consistem em uma mistura de reguladores de crescimento que, quando aplicados nas plantas, atuam no equilíbrio hormonal, melhorando seu desenvolvimento. Stimulate® é um bioestimulante composto por ácido indolbutírico (0,005%), cinetina (0,009%) e ácido giberélico (0,005%), que promove o crescimento das raízes, melhora a absorção de água e nutrientes e ajuda a restaurar o equilíbrio hormonal das plantas. Esta pesquisa foi baseada na hipótese de que a pulverização com Stimulate® pode ser uma forma alternativa de mitigar os efeitos negativos da limitação da água no solo para o crescimento das plantas. O trabalho experimental foi realizado em casa de vegetação e objetivou avaliar respostas fisiológicas de plantas jovens de Eucalyptus urophylla pulverizadas com diferentes concentrações de Stimulate® e submetidas aos seguintes regimes de irrigação: total, parcial e sem irrigação. Foram mensurados o potencial hídrico foliar, o teor relativo de água, a fotossíntese líquida, a altura de plantas e o comprimento da raiz principal. Sob condições de limitação hídrica, as plantas pulverizadas com Stimulate® apresentaram maior fotossíntese líquida, e o conteúdo relativo de água teve menor decréscimo, devido ao ajuste osmótico. A pulverização com Stimulate® também proporcionou maior altura de planta e maior comprimento de raiz principal em plantas sob deficit hídrico. Concluiu-se que o uso de Stimulate® pode ser uma opção viável para mitigar os efeitos fisiológicos negativos do estresse hídrico em plantas jovens de Eucalyptus urophylla, ajudando a manter parcialmente o crescimento das plantas sob condições de limitação hídrica.

Abstract Biostimulants consist of a mixture of growth regulators that, when they are sprayed on plants, act on hormonal balance, enhancing its development. Stimulate® is a biostimulant composed by indole butyric acid (0.005%), kinetin (0.009%) and gibberellic acid (0.005%) which promotes root growth, improves water and nutrients uptake, and helps restore plant hormonal balance. This research was based on the hypothesis that Stimulate® spraying can be an alternate way to mitigate negative effects of soil water-limiting on plant growth. The experimental work was performed in greenhouse and aimed to evaluate physiological responses of young plants of Eucalyptus urophylla sprayed with different Stimulate® concentrations and submitted to the following irrigation regimes: full, partial and no irrigation. Leaf water potential, relative water content, net photosynthesis, plant height and main root length were measured. Under water-limited conditions, plants sprayed with Stimulate® showed higher net photosynthesis and relative water content had a less decrease, due to osmotic adjustment. Spraying with Stimulate® also provided greater plant height and longer main root length in plants under water deficit. We conclude that the use of Stimulate® can be a viable option to mitigate negative water stress physiological effects in young plants of Eucalyptus urophylla, helping to partially maintain the plant growth under water-limited conditions.

Resumo Os sintomas da deficiência de magnésio (Mg) têm sido bem documentados em plantas cultivadas. A relação entre a deficiência de Mg, como um importante fator de estresse abiótico, e a partição do açúcares, pode restringir o crescimento das raízes e limitar o sucesso do plantio no campo. Apesar disso, os efeitos fisiológicos primários da baixa disponibilidade de Mg permanecem amplamente desconhecidos no eucalipto. Este trabalho buscou investigar como a deficiência de Mg afeta aspectos bioquímicos da partição de açúcares, associados ao acúmulo de matéria seca em raízes de plantas jovens de Eucalyptus urophylla. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com parcelas subdivididas 5 x 4, utilizando os seguintes níveis de Mg: 0, 25, 50, 75 e 100% na concentração da solução nutritiva de Clark. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 15, 30, 50 e 120 dias após o plantio (DAP) das mudas em vasos. Determinaram-se os teores de açúcares solúveis (SS) e redutores (RS), as atividades da invertase e da sacarose sintase (susy), e a matéria seca da parte aérea e da raiz. Aumentos nas concentrações de açúcares, tanto SS como RS, foram encontrados em tecidos foliares a partir de 30 DAP. Nos tecidos de raízes, os teores de RS e SS não apresentaram diferenças entre os tratamentos com deficiência de Mg e o controle. Diferenças significativas também não foram encontradas, tanto no acúmulo de matéria seca da raiz, como na razão matéria seca de parte aérea / raízes. A deficiência de Mg não afetou a clivagem de sacarose nas raízes, que foi predominantemente catalisada pela invertase ácida, seguida de susy e invertase neutra. Concluiu-se que Eucalyptus urophylla é tolerante à deficiência de Mg, uma vez que o acúmulo de açúcares nos tecidos foliares não foi suficiente para restringir o acúmulo de matéria seca nas raízes.

Abstract The symptoms of magnesium (Mg) deficiency have been well documented in crop plants. The relationship between Mg deficiency as an important abiotic stress factor and the sugar partitioning may restrict the root growth and limit the success of planting in the field. Despite of this, the primary physiological effects of low Mg availability remain largely unknown in eucalyptus. This paper aimed to investigate how the Mg deficiency affects biochemical aspects of sugar partitioning associated to dry matter accumulation in roots of Eucalyptus urophylla young plants, clone AEC 144. Experimental work was carried out in a greenhouse, arranged by completely randomized design, consisted by split plot 5x4, using the following Mg levels: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% in the Mg concentration of Clark’s nutrient solution. Evaluations were performed at 15, 30, 50 and 120 days after seedlings planting (DAP) in pots. Soluble (SS) and reducing (RS) sugar contents, invertase and sucrose synthase (susy) activity and shoot and root dry matter were measured. Increased sugar concentrations, both SS and RS, were found in leaf tissues from 30 DAP. In root tissues, neither RS nor SS content showed differences between Mg deficiency treatments and control. Significant differences were also not found in both root dry matter accumulation and shoot/root dry matter ratio. The Mg deficiency did not affect sucrose cleaving in roots, which was predominantly catalyzed by acidic invertase, followed by susy and neutral invertase. We concluded that Eucalyptus urophylla is tolerant to Mg deficiency, because the sugar accumulation in the leaf tissues was not enough to constrain the dry matter accumulation in roots.

Os prolongados períodos de seca no Sudoeste da Bahia podem causar prejuízos ao cultivo de eucalipto, que é a principal espécie florestal cultivada nessa região. Com o propósito de se conhecer o desempenho de alguns clones de eucalipto, face às restrições hídricas dessa região, realizou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação, no qual foram avaliadas respostas fisiológicas de quatro clones de eucalipto à baixa disponibilidade de água no solo. Utilizou-se delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, no qual os tratamentos constituíram um arranjo fatorial 4x2 (clones VM01, VCC0865, AEC0144 e AEC0224, sob regimes hídricos irrigado e não irrigado), com quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. Mudas com 90 dias de idade foram aclimatadas em casa de vegetação e irrigadas durante 60 dias. Após esse período, suspendeu-se a irrigação para um grupo de plantas, dando início às avaliações de potencial hídrico foliar (Ψw), teor relativo de água (TRA), transpiração (E), condutância estomática (gs), fotossíntese (A) e concentração interna de CO2 (Ci). A deficiência hídrica causou alterações significativas em todas as variáveis avaliadas: Ψw, TRA, E, gs e A sofreram decréscimos, ao passo que Ci aumentou. As reduções em Ψw e TRA não registraram diferenças significativas entre os clones. Em relação a A, essa redução foi menor no clone VM01.

The long dry periods in Bahia Southwest can harm the eucalyptus cultivation, which is the most important forestry specie cultivated in this region. This research aimed to evaluate the physiological responses of eucalyptus clones, grown in a greenhouse under water deficit. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, and the treatments were a factorial 4x2 (VM01, VCC0865, AEC0144 and AEC0224 clones, under irrigated and non irrigated water regimes) with four replications and two plants per plot. The seedlings were 90 days old and the acclimation was carried out in a greenhouse, with irrigation, for 60 days. After the acclimation, irrigation was interrupted to a group of plants, and the following evaluations were started: leaf water potential (Ψw), water relative content (TRA), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs), photosynthesis (A) and CO2 internal concentration (Ci). Significant changes were observed in all variables. There was a decrease in Ψw, TRA, E, gs and A, whereas increased Ci. The Ψw and TRA decreases showed no significant differences among the clones. In relation to A, this decrease was lower in VM01 clone.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar respostas fisiológicas e crescimento de plantas jovens de Eucalyptus urophylla em meio hidropônico, num delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com cinco proporções de NO3- e NH4+ (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 e 100/0) e quatro repetições. As proporções NO3-/NH4+ afetaram o crescimento inicial, alterando o acúmulo de massa seca, o índice de qualidade de Dickson, o índice SPAD e os teores de macronutrientes foliares. A proporção 75/25 foi a que mais favoreceu o crescimento das plantas, com base na expansão dos tecidos e no acúmulo de massa seca. Contudo, as proporções de NO3-/NH4+ não causaram alterações significativas em alguns aspectos fisiológicos, tais como fotossíntese líquida e trocas gasosas. As proporções de NO3- e NH4+ alteraram o pH das soluções hidropônicas, a atividade da redutase do nitrato e o estado nutricional das plantas, sem, contudo, apresentar sintomas visíveis de carência ou excesso de macronutrientes nas folhas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological responses and growth of Eucalyptus urophylla young plants, clone AEC0144, in hydroponic medium, in a completely randomized experimental design with five different ratios of NO3- and NH4+ (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 and 100/0) and four replications. The NO3-/NH4+ ratios analyzed affected the initial growth of plants by changing the dry mass accumulation, Dickson quality index, SPAD index, and leaf macronutrient content. Plant growth was particularly favored by the 75/25 NO3-/NH4+ ratio, based on tissue expansion and dry matter accumulation. However, the NO3-/NH4+ ratios didn't cause significant change in some physiological aspects, such as net photosynthesis and nitrogen assimilation metabolism. The NO3-/NH4+ ratios affected the pH of nutrient solutions, nitrate reductase activity and plant nutritional status, but no visible symptoms of deficiency or excess of macronutrients were detected in the leaves.

Neste estudo foram avaliados os efeitos de diferentes combinações de substratos sobre características morfológicas e fisiológicas relacionadas à qualidade de mudas de Eucalyptus urophylla. O experimento foi conduzido em um viveiro florestal a pleno sol, no qual foram produzidas mudas em tubetes de 54 cc e irrigadas por microaspersão. Empregou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com 12 tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram baseados nas seguintes combinações de substratos: dois substratos comerciais (Vivatto Slim Plus e Mecplant), esterco bovino, pó de casca de coco, vermiculita e uma combinação utilizada por uma empresa do ramo florestal. Em todos os tratamentos foi adicionado Osmocote, fertilizante mineral de suprimento controlado de NPK. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: Índice de Velocidade de Emergência (IVE), Emergência Total de Plântulas (EMER), Índice de Qualidade Dickson (IQD), Índice SPAD e Potencial de Regeneração de Raízes (PRR). Em geral, os melhores resultados foram obtidos nos tratamentos que continham esterco bovino e pó de casca de coco nas combinações de substratos. Para a qualificação das mudas, os valores de IQD mostraram-se, quase sempre, relacionados positivamente aos de PRR, exceto o substrato 100% da Vivatto Slim Plus, em que os maiores valores de IQD estiveram associados a valores mais baixos de PRR. A combinação de 40% de esterco bovino, 20% de pó de casca de coco e 40% de vermiculita resultou nas maiores médias do índice SPAD. A combinação de 70% de esterco bovino e 30% de pó de casca de coco proporcionou a produção de mudas com os maiores valores de PRR, as quais apresentaram qualidade superior à das demais combinações de substratos, com base nas características avaliadas.

It was evaluated in this study the effects of different combinations of substrates on the morphologic and physiological characteristcs related to the quality of Eucalyptus urophylla seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a a forest nursery on the sun, in which seedlings were produced in 54 cc tubes and irrigated by micron aspersion. It was used a complete random experimental design with 12 treatments and four replicates. Treatments were based on the following combinations of substrate: two commercial substrates (Vivatto Slim Plus and Mecplant), manure, coconut bark powder, vermiculite, and a mixture substrate used by a Forest Company. Osmocote, a mineral fertilizer which has a controlled NPK supply, was added into all treatments. The following characteristics were evaluated: root regeneration potential (RRP); total seedling growth (TSG); growth speed index (GSI), Dickson quality index (IQD), and SPAD index. Overall, the best results were obtained in treatments with coconut bark powder and manure. Concerning seedling quality, IQD values were almost always positively associated to RRP, except the 100% Vivatto Slim Plus substrates which showed lower RRP. The highest means of SPAD indexes were obtained from the combination of 40% manure, 20% coconut bark, and 40% vermiculite. The combination of 70% manure and 30% coconut bark powder provided seedlings production with the highest values of RRP, which presented superior quality than the other substrates combination, based on the evaluated characteristics.

Estudos já realizados sobre clones de seringueira cultivados no estado de Minas Gerais têm fornecido indícios que permitem supor a existência de uma possível associação entre a variabilidade fotossintética e a produção de látex. Contudo, ainda é escasso o conhecimento acerca da assimilação de CO2 e o transporte de carbono das folhas até a casca, onde a biossíntese de látex ocorre de forma mais intensa. Em todas as etapas desses metabolismos, as reações são reguladas por algumas enzimas-chave. Este trabalho propôsse a avaliar a atividade da Rubisco e das principais enzimas de síntese e hidrólise de sacarose, em plantas de um jardim clonal de seringueira pertencentes aos clones RRIM 600, GT 1 e FX 2261, e sua relação com o desempenho produtivo de plantas adultas e em franca produção. Os resultados sugeriram uma provável associação entre a atividade da Rubisco e das invertases (ácida e neutra) e o desempenho produtivo dos clones. Não houve evidências de tal associação, em relação à sacarose-fosfato sintase (SPS) e à sacarose sintase (SuSy), cujas atividades não diferiram entre os clones avaliados. A hidrólise de sacarose na casca foi exercida predominantemente pela ação da invertase ácida. Em proporções menores e equivalentes, essa atividade foi complementada pela SuSy e pela invertase neutra.

Previous researches on rubber tree clone cultivation in Minas Gerais state have provided evidences for a possible association between photosynthetic variability and latex production. Nevertheless, knowledge about the CO2 assimilation and carbon transport from leaves to bark, where the latex biosynthesis is higher, is still scarce. In all steps of these metabolisms, the reactions are regulated by some key enzymes. The aim of this work was to evaluate the Rubisco and the main enzymes of sucrose synthesis and hydrolysis activities in rubber tree plants from a clonal garden, identified as RRIM 600, GT 1, and FX 2261 clones, and their relationship to rubber productivity in the adult plants. The results suggested that the activities of Rubisco and invertases (acidic and neutral) are probably associated to the rubber productivity. This association was no clear in relation to sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS) and sucrose synthase (SuSy), whose activity showed no difference among the clones. The sucrose hydrolysis in the bark was predominantly catalyzed by the acidic invertase. In smaller and equivalent proportions, sucrose hydrolysis was complemented by the SuSy and neutral invertase activity.

Este trabalho, propôs-se a investigar mudanças no comportamento fotossintético durante a ontogenia foliar dos clones de seringueira PB 235, RRIM 600 e GT 1, em Lavras, MG. O experimento foi realizado no período de maio a julho de 2004, em condições de campo, na Universidade Federal de Lavras. Durante a ontogenia foliar avaliaram-se as seguintes características: os teores de clorofilas, as trocas gasosas e a fluorescência da clorofila. Os clones apresentaram perfis semelhantes de alterações nas características fisiológicas avaliadas durante o desenvolvimento foliar. Até o 32º dia de idade foliar (estádio B2), a fotossíntese líquida foi negativa, devido à ineficiência do sistema fotossintético, sendo esta justificada pelos seguintes fatores: reduzidos teores de clorofilas, menor condutância estomática, alta concentração interna de CO2 e baixa fluorescência de clorofilas. A partir do 37º dia de idade foliar, a fotossíntese líquida tornou-se positiva e gradativamente maior, estimulada por aumentos nos teores de clorofilas, eficiência fotoquímica do fotossistema II, eficiência de carboxilação, condutância estomática, transpiração e eficiência no uso da água. Entre os clones, o comportamento fotossintético foi semelhante, atingindo desempenho máximo no 57º dia de idade foliar (estádio D), quando o clone RRIM 600 apresentou a maior taxa de fotossíntese líquida diferenciando-se significativamente dos clones PB 235 e GT 1.

This work proposed to investigate changes in the photosynthetic behavior during the leaf ontogeny of the during the leaf development. Up to the 32nd day of leaf age (stage B2), the net photosynthesis was negative due to the inefficiency of the photosynthetic system, and this fact was justified by the following factors: low chlorophyll content, less stomatal conductance, high rubber tree clones PB 235, RRIM 600 and GT 1, in Lavras, MG. The experiment was performed in 2004, between May and July, under field conditions, at the Universidade Federal de Lavras. During the leaf ontogeny, the following characteristics were evaluated: chlorophyll content, gaseous exchanges and chlorophyll fluorescence. The clones presented similar profiles of alterations in the physiological characteristics internal CO2 levels and low chlorophyll fluorescence. From the 37th day of leaf age, net photosynthesis became positive and gradually higher, stimulated by the increases in the chlorophyll contents, photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, carboxylation efficiency, stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency. Among the clones, photosynthetic behavior was similar, reaching maximum performance on the 57th day of leaf age (stage D), when clone RRIM 600 showed the highest net photosynthesis, differing from the clones PB 235 and GT 1.

A despeito de ser o berço das espécies do gênero Hevea, o Brasil contribuiu, em 2001, com apenas 1,5% da produção mundial de 7,132 milhões de toneladas e consumiu em torno de 3,5% de um total de 7,03 milhões de toneladas da demanda mundial de borracha. Os clones mais produtivos são os orientais RRIM 600, PB 235 e PR 255, com produção em torno de 1.500 kg de borracha seca/ha/ano, o que evidencia sua adaptação a vários padrões climáticos. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o comportamento produtivo de clones de seringueira [(Hevea brasiliensis (Willd.ex. Adr. de Juss.) Muell. Arg.], associado a fatores climáticos sazonais e fisiológicos sobre a produção de látex em Lavras (MG). O trabalho foi desenvolvido na área experimental do Departamento de Biologia, Setor de Fisiologia Vegetal, da Universidade Federal de Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brasil, durante o período de junho de 2001 a julho de 2003. Os fatores hídricos e nutricionais das plantas foram adequados ao desempenho produtivo, sendo o clone RRIM 600 amplamente superior aos demais, além de apresentar correlação com os fatores ambientais durante o período avaliado. Os fatores nutricionais do látex e o índice de obstrução indicaram correlação significativa com a produção.

In spite of being the cradle of the species of the genus Hevea, Brazil contributed, in 2001, with only 1.5% of the world production of 7.132 million tons and it consumed around 3.5% of a total of 7.03 million tons of the world demand. The most productive clones are the orientals RRIM 600, PB 235 and PR 255, with production around 1,500 kg of dry rubber/ha/year. The cultivation of those clones in different regions in Brazil shows adaptation to several climatic patterns. The aim of this work was to evaluate the productive behavior of clones of rubber tree, associated to seasonal climatic and physiologic factors in relation to the latex production in Lavras, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The research was conducted in the experimental area of Biology Department of Federal University of Lavras, sector of Plant Physiology, between June 2001 and July 2003. The plant water relations and nutritional factors were appropriate to the productive period. The productivity of clone RRIM 600 was higher than the others and presented positive correlation to the environmental factors during the experimental period. The nutritional factors of the latex and the obstruction index showed significant correlation to the production.
